Barbara

I just used a running martingale for the first time just the other day. I didn't know what length to use it so I studied some sites online and the ones I found said to have it come up to the withers/edge of where the mane starts when brough straight up. It looks like the ones you are using are much shorter on the horses. Now I'm confused. I think I'll use it on both reins till I and my horse becomes more familiar with using it.

Barbara, indeed the martingale would be too long. From the bit, the reins should run in a straight line to your hands, which should be positioned about the hight of the withers. If the martingales are too long, they do not serve any purpose, they won't help with collection nor will they protect your face when the horse suddenly throws his head up. With the reins running in a straight line through your hands to the elbows, the martingales should be as long as not to impede the communication from the bit to the riders hands, but also not too long so that they would hang loosely below the straight reins.
